(This was a tragedy he witnessed, so because of this - and many other deaths he's seen over his lifetime -, Jackson can see Thestrals). His only surviving relative was his maternal grandfather, Nick Ballard - also a muggle -, who would not take him in mainly because his job took him around the world, but also because of what Daniel was. Daniel grew up under the care of Muggle foster parents, who took care of him up to and during his time at Hogwarts, where he got excellent grades due to his interest in education and the wizarding world. Daniel, deciding to follow after his parents despite his abilities as a wizard, went to a Muggle university and has PhD's in Archaeology, Anthropology and Philology and is a linguist (he knows approximately twenty-three different languages; see below). It was around his fifth year at Hogwarts when he began aspiring to teach at the school someday, and he decided to fulfill that dream after his wife, Sha're, was taken by Death Eaters (it's still unknown what became of her, but he plans to find out and get her back). Daniel is intrigued by most things around him and has often been described as 'geeky' or 'dorky' due to his nose-in-bookery, but he's one of the more friendly and understanding teachers on staff and is always willing to help a student in need. He has a strange ability to avoid death - just as a tribute to how many times he's died and returned to life/narrowly evaded his demise in his canon series - and loves his job, even if some kids at the school are kind of crazy and cause him to stay on his toes a lot of the time.
